Don Crittenden’s Hard-Earned Sabbatical
Dr. Don Crittenden, 2PC’s director of discipleship and mission, is getting ready for some well-deserved relaxation.
Serving as a pastor is often a non-stop, 24-hour/day, 7-day/week calling. It is difficult to take a break from pastoral responsibilities to re-charge the batteries and reconnect with the people and activities we love. Former pastoral staff members at 2PC have struggled to live full healthy lives, and it seems likely that the rigors of providing pastoral leadership have contributed to this struggle.
Therefore, in 2007, the personnel committee instituted a sabbatical policy for the ordained staff. The policy states that after every four years of employment, associate pastors are eligible for a one-month sabbatical, and after every five years of employment, I (the head pastor) am eligible for a three-month sabbatical.
Anyways, let’s get back to Don’s relaxation. Don is the first pastor eligible to take advantage of this sabbatical policy, having begun at 2PC in May 2004. Don’s sabbatical will begin on Sunday, July 12, and he will return to the office on Wednesday, August 12. During this month, Don will be travel to Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he will audit three classes. These classes are about Ephesians-Colossians, the Spiritual Autobiography and the Missional Church. Additionally, Don will spend sometime relaxing in the Pacific Northwest, and Ann, his wife, will join him there for the last week of his sabbatical.
In his time at 2PC, Don has worked under three different heads-of-staff (which alone probably qualifies him for a sabbatical) and his responsibilities have changed a number of times. In late 2006/early 2007, Don was the last pastor standing on staff, and some of that workload caught up with him when he developed a few health issues last year. I am grateful for Don’s hard work and am happy he will have time to recharge.
During the time when Don is on sabbatical, please do not contact him by phone or email for any church-related business. It will be difficult for him to fully recharge if he regularly has to field calls or emails. If you have questions about Don’s areas of responsibilities, please contact my assistant Tiffany or I, and we will put you in contact with the appropriate people.
Sincerely,
Dr. Charles B. Hardwick
